Once again the Justice and Peace Group has organised the "10% Collection" - the details and a nomination form are below.
If a reminder were needed of the harsh realities in which the charities are involved, here is a letter of thanks from Shelterbox, one of the charities which benefited from the Christmas Collection last year.
ST PIUS CHRISTMAS CHARITIES COLLECTION 2018
Sunday 18th December was the second World Day for the Poor declared by Pope Francis. Now is a good time to begin to look ahead to Christmas and consider concrete ways for helping those less fortunate than us. As a community we aim to raise funds for charities nominated by the St Pius parishioners. The idea of this Collection is that a household adds up the total it spends on Christmas - covering presents, food and drink, Christmas cards, decorations etc. Each household is encouraged to make a charitable donation equivalent to a proportion of what is spent – the guideline is 10% - but may be more or less. Donations will be made to the St Pius Charities Fund and will qualify for Gift Aid.
Parishioners are invited to nominate charities addressing the needs of the Poorest of the Poor. Traditionally, we look for smaller charities where our contribution will make a bigger impact. A form for nominating a charity is below. The final date for submission of nominations is after Mass on Monday 3rd December.
From among the charities nominated recommendations will be made to the Parish Priest by a panel of members of the J&P Group and other St Pius parishioners who have relevant experience. As usual, we will identify a charity that operates locally, one that operates on a wider scale in Britain and a third that operates overseas.
Please place the completed nomination form in the Red Mail Box by the Repository in the Narthex as soon as possible and not later than 8pm on Monday 3rd December. Alternatively, email the details of your nomination to StPiusInPrint@gmail.com on or before the closing time.
The names of the recommended charities will be announced on the weekend of 8th and 9th December when Collection envelopes will be available. The Collection will be taken on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December. In case of queries please contact Mary Fox or Michael Combes in person or via StPiusInPrint@gmail.com.
