A shortlist was drawn up from the charity nominations collected from the congregations over recent weeks. The voting slip available in the church invited people to vote for their preferred charities in each of the 'Local', 'National' and 'International' categories.
After the poll closed on 4th December, the votes were counted and the following charities will benefit from this year's 10% Collection. This will form the retiring collection on 17th & 18th December.
Local charity - Footsteps
This is a drop-in centre open on Sunday evenings and Christmas Day in Guildford town centre, at Beverley Hall in Haydon Place. Our aim is to help homeless and needy people in and around Guildford. We serve up to 40 men and women each week. Approximately two thirds are 'regulars' and the rest are itinerant.
National charity - Housing Justice
Provides the national voice of Christian action in the field of housing and homelessness. It supports night shelters, drop-ins and hundreds of practical projects.
International charity - Depaul Ukraine Zaluchya Orphanage
Depaul International, a UK based charity inspired by St Vincent de Paul has a national charity in Ukraine. The orphanage in Zaluchya is a project which truly fulfils the criterion of ‘poorest of the poor’ The children are severely disabled, the orphanage does the bare minimum to keep them alive, the conditions are poor, and all that enables them to develop or enjoy life comes from the Depaul volunteers. Fundraising is almost impossible in Ukraine, with international interest is very low, so it’s hard to find even their modest budget of £30,000 a year. The nominator visited and has distressing photos of the needs. If chosen, the money would go to Depaul International, with the explicit restriction that it goes directly to the orphanage project (which they will do). The total budget for Depaul Ukraine is only around £400,000, for a massive range of projects and services in a very difficult country that few people know or cares about. All the funds come from the UK.
