Many in the Parish know and support Carole and David Hudson's fantastic charity Project Peru, which operates a children's refuge in Peru providing food, clothing, shelter, education and healthcare.
One important aspect of Project Peru is that virtually everything is done on a volunteer basis, so that all the money raised by the charity benefits those in its care. Carole explained to me this week that even the shipping of containers of goods from the UK to Peru is provided free of charge to Project Peru, as are the ingredients for the many Christmas cakes which Project Peru offers for raffle all over the country at this time of the year.

This year's Christmas Greetings Campaign will be available at St. Joseph's and at St. Pius, and has been arranged by the CPG Justice & Peace Group. Greetings sign-up weekend is 8th/9th December at both churches. Michael Combes tells us here about the charity ACAT - Action by Christians Against torture - and the case studies at the heart of this campaign.
Once again the Justice and Peace Group has organised the "10% Collection" - the details and a nomination form are below.
If a reminder were needed of the harsh realities in which the charities are involved, here is a letter of thanks from Shelterbox, one of the charities which benefited from the Christmas Collection last year. The Diocese has not produced its own materials for Advent Reflection this year, but has recommended two courses. There is also CAFOD's interactive Advent Calendar and a reminder of Sue Richardson's suggestions from last year about setting up an Advent Reflection Group. Further options are the Together in Christ showing of the BBC film "The Nativity" at St. John the Evangelist, Merrow, and a series of four reflections at St. Mary's, Quarry Street.
More than 50 people gathered in the hall at St. Pius X on 9th November, including the 11 pictured here - each celebrating a Big Birthday this year - and parishioners who came to share in their celebrations. The Big O's were two 90's, three 80's, four 70's, one 50 and one 40. Another 70 was unable to attend.
